CUI Conductor
Special cases are, for example, if bare/uninsulated down conductors and lightning protection earth electrodes are installed near the entrance of sheltering areas of buildings with high visitor frequency, such as theatres, cinemas, shopping centres, etc. Buildings or structures with public access (e.g. shelters) which are particularly exposed (lightning endangered) may also require protection measures against step and touch voltage.
Protection against touch voltage
Touch voltage means a life-threatening voltage that affects a person who touches the down conductor while standing on the ground within a distance of about 1 m from the down conductor touches the down conductor. The current flows through the hand into the body and down to the feet (see Figure 1/2).
The hazardous area for people outside of a building is defined as an area of 3 m around the down conductor and from ground level up to a height of approx. 3 m.
Details
The dangerous area of touch and step voltages for living beings is defined as an area of approx. 3 m around the down conductor, from ground level up to a height of approx. 3 m.The CUI Conductor has a copper core and a high-voltage-resistant insulation. These conductors must:
- have a impulse withstand voltage of 100 kV (1.2/50 µs)
- prevent creeping sparkover even during rain
